Laetiporus cincinnatus
This beautifully colored variant of the Sulfur Shelf,
considered somewhat rare, is fairly common in Kansas. With white
tubes and a salmon colored cap, it is very distinctive. While the
better known Sulfur Shelf usually fruits on trees, sometimes at heights
which make harvesting difficult to hazardous, this mushroom usually forms
rosettes over buried wood.
This particular specimen was about 12 inches
in diameter, and was tender clear to the base. It froze nicely without
any preparation other than cleaning, and the frozen portions tasted the
same as the fresh after thawing and cooking.
