Mutinus elegans
The "Devils Dipstick" is common in Kansas.
Frequently you are aware of its presence before you see it, as it is a
stinkhorn. While the dark fetid spore slime is still evident it will
emit a putrid odor, although it is not as offensive as that of other species
of stinkhorns. As this is consumed by insects, the brighter color
of the fruiting body shows.
Mutinus caninus, the Dog Stinkhorn, is
similar but tapers abruptly near the apex and is rare in Kansas.
While this specimen was photographed in a wooded area, I have found the
mushroom growing in my mowed yard near the base of a walnut tree.
