Amanita thiersii

Amanita thiersii
This mushroom is generally considered a southern mushroom. It was first identified at this somewhat northern location in Lawrence in 1988, although it had been found several years before. Now it has become a common summer urban mushroom during rainy spells. It frequently fruits at the same time as Chlorophyllum molybdites.

It is a rather large Amanita, and is especially notable for the sticky, cottony, lace-like mass that is the remains of the universal veil. It is named in honor of Dr. Harry Thiers, well known for his participation in many North American Mycological Association (NAMA) forays.
